Post Wife adamantly against Vitamin C Supplements for Child. Help

Subject: My Wife won't allow me to give Vitamin C to our daughter

Date: Sunday, June 17, 2012, 8:28 PM

Dear Sirs:

I supplemented my young (now five-years-old) daughter with vitamin c (250 mg, three times a day, since she’s about 1/4 the weight of an adult woman, so 1/4 of 1000 mg 3 times days is 250 mg 3 times a day) so that her immune system will be stronger and she will be healthier.

My wife disagrees, saying that vitamin C has stunted her growth (she’s one of the shortest kids in her class) and makes her weak because she gets sick less often. She wants us to behave like other parents and only give a multivitamin. She also thinks that the vitamin C in food is good enough.

My wife has militantly said no to giving vitamin C to our daughter and I cannot reason with her at all.

Could you please write me a paragraph or two that may help convince her that vitamin C supplementation is a good thing to do?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

R. W.

First, congratulations on your wisdom!

However, with now more than 100,000 studies, hundreds of books, and our mass of experience, it would be hard to convince anyone who already has their mind made up in just a few paragraphs! (But we'll post at our forum, and parents will probably respond, and you can ask your wife to read how others feel about giving their children vitamin C.)

First, start/keep a diary, don't trust your memory, of your child's general health. Her general health will deteriorate if you stop the rather small amount of supplementation you have been giving - and she will become vitamin C's biggest advocate in your household after it is stopped.

Has your child's growth hormone been checked? Can you order LEF.ORG (life extension) blood tests in Canada? Either way, you might try following Pauling's entire regimen in HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND FEEL BETTER, (which is another great idea if your wife likes to read. Have her read Linus Pauling's book!) With Pauling's regimen (which my son received before he was conceived (through my wife) and on until now age 22, the chance improves of your daughter creating more of her own growth and other hormones.

Does she have trouble sleeping?

Back to vitamin C - we humans are one of the few species that has to worry about taking in vitamin C by mouth. Almost every other species in existence today makes its own vitamin C in the liver/kidneys 24/7, and amounts averaging 3000 to 13000 mg (adjusted for body weight. It is our contention, following Linus Pauling's lead, that most of the ills of mankind can be traced to this ancient genetic defect.

And rather than stunting growth, we can show that excellent nutrition can improve growth.

My first reaction would be to ask, what, if any, scientific evidence does she have for saying this occurs in humans? But better to leave sleeping wild animals be.

She seems to be confusing the concept of hormesis with environmentally sourced pathology. This is most illogical.
Does she have any science to back up her arguments? But better to leave good enough alone.

If your daughter consumes less of the mass produced dairy products than her peers do, this would not surprise me. Mass-produced dairy usually has relatively large amounts of bovine growth hormone in it. Hint: It's action doesn't magically stop at the bovine teet.

A student of history she is not. There are too many examples to list, but the Warsaw Ghetto history lesson wouldn't be a poor choice for someone's starting point. But better to leave good enough alone.

My condolences to you.

I can think of worse problems than that. Why not just accept it and move on? You can always try to use your own lifestyle choices and actions to become a good example for others. That way, no words are necessary.

In the grand scheme of things, on what basis have you decided that she, or you, or anyone, would somehow be in dire need of convincing?

Don't mention it R.W. Best wishes on creating a stress-free environment for your family.

This could be actually possible if she is extremely non sick. Little kids should be sick, but should have mild symptoms, that don't require doctor visits and that only mildly influence course of the babies day.
Since you say she is sick less often, then I think C works as it should. I see exactly the same phenomena with my daughter - 1 to 2 days of mild sickness every month or so. And one that lasts for 7 days every 3 months or so. I give her 2x1g of vitamin C in normal condition and higher when sick along with cod liver oil, fish oil, vitamin D, zinc, kelp, Mg, Ehinacea, multivitamin etc...
My experience is extremely positive at this moment and let me just say that she attends kindergarten where half of the kids are sick every day.

But how to fix your problem ? Solution is easy really - she doesn't have to know !
You can put powder in her food or juice when she doesn't watch.

You can't fight unreasonable attitude with reason. There might be some few reasonable objections against vitamin C megadoses for kids but she expressed none of those (for instance it might promote esophageal pain or gastric pain theoretically, or even metabolic conditioning, but I still think that even if it happens its nothing compared to benefits). As for her other objections, those are, well, fantasies, and you know you can't reason with woman.

Daughter took 1 gm/day C from weaning, then 1gm/day/year of age after up to 10. More if any sign of any problem.
Her question - "what is sick?"
Ans: "sick is what happens when you go to college and don't take your vitamins."
Only took one time to fix that error.

Dear Dr. Fonorow:

I could not give my wife your e-mail, as she was vehemently opposed to vitamin C and drew a line in the sand...but when my daughter started getting dry, scaly skin, my wife suddenly relented!

I’m so glad I can help give my daughter the best chance at health now, and I thank you for your efforts to promote vitamin C to everyone!

Kind regards,

Rand W.

You might encourage her to read Pauling's book, HOW TO LIVE LONGER AND FEEL BETTER, because the other nutrients Pauling recommends for everyone can help with skin problems, e.g. vitamins A and E.

The Alan Graham article quoted below was aimed more for adults, not children. Perhaps adjust accordingly.

Ignore his lipoic acid suggestion. Use your common sense with the NAC suggestion, etc.

Quote:
(a) - Take 2 to 5 grams Krill Oil or Fish Oil...

(b) - Take 2 or 3 grams of Black Currant Oil...

(etc.)

Lastly avoid stuff that attacks your gut & suppresses your immune system. I've said all this stuff before but it bears repeating:

(1) ..Sugar - Probably the #1 most harmful thing you put in your mouth...

(etc.)
